For a very extensive period IBM has published an OS/2 Strategy. It stated IBMs intention to scale back OS/2 support and created the recommendation that customers implement a phased transition from client-and-server environments for the WebSphere software platform. Consistent with that direction, OS/2 Warp V4 and OS/2 Warp Server for e-business are already withdrawn from marketing along with the product CDs aren't available. End of Standard Support via Passport Advantage for both products was December 31, 2006. Both announcements were on July 12, 2005. See announced with the specific announcement letter for each individual geography.
Existing OS/2 customers can find additional OS/2 licenses with an exception basis. IBM will review each request and notify the consumer if it's approved.

Main characteristics of OS/2 Operating System 2 are primarily the straightforward and powerful interface WPS Workplace Shell, stability and technology lead in the years of OS/2. The gui is built up completely object-oriented. OS/2 of IBM doesn't have to get compared with DOS or Windows extensions much more since the version 2.0. This latest version corresponded to an alternative operating system generation, containing the potential to utilize the full performance of any 32-bit CPU, developed only by IBM. Up to version 1.3 IBM had cooperated in development with Microsoft. The beta version was tested by 30, 000 voluntary. It was made beneath the slogan to develop a Better DOS than DOS with success. Much programs for DOS and Windows 3.x, Win32s are executed faster under OS/2 when compared to the original operating environment.
The project Odin provides the destination to carry out Win32 programs Windows 9.x and Windows NT in OS/2 Warp natively. This happens by conversion of files to the OS/2 format or about adjustment on the programcode copy inside memory as inside the case of OS/2 programs. Said more exactly, the PE Portable Executable Win32 binary format get converted into your OS/2 LX binarily linear eXecutable format.
A special project is the operating-system eComStation produced by Serenty Systems. The last version in the OS/2 os was modified, enhanced and taken for the newest technical level, the interface also was improved.
OS/2 Warp 4 was launched by IBM in 1996. Because on the long-lasting support by IBM this operating-system is holded current through service releases and newer hardware drivers to make use of OS/2 on current personal computers. Until May 2001 the service release 15 and also the Device Driver Pack 2 0 are free of charge of charge. With this update the machine version 4.0 rev. 9.023 was upgraded to version 4.5 rev. 14.096 cW4. After this release IBM grants newer updates only in context from the software subscription with costs. Furthermore at no cost are additions and driver software to compliment new fixed disk controllers along with ATAPI devices. Indispensable would be the driver software of Daniela Engert 1 which completely replace the IBM standard driver software. With this new drivers large FAT 32 partitions are accessable without problems as well as the drives operates now inside DMA mode instead on the much slower PIO mode.
The original installation media includes one boot and a couple installation floppy disks, one computer CD-ROM with bonus pack, one application sampler CD-ROM and something driver software CD for older hardware like ISA boards. However, you'll need only the boot disk, the main system CD-ROM plus much more current installation floppy disks 2 for booting on current PCs.
By the updates you have got year 2000 support, new hardware devices, support for big fixed disks around 502 GByte from the 48-items of LBA addressing before at most of the 4.3 or 8.4 GByte, memory of over 1 GByte as an alternative to only 64 MByte, USB devices, faster graphics display and SMP support. FAT 16 partitions are limited by a maximum dimensions of 2.1 GByte, HPFS partitions are recognized as much as a height and width of 64 GByte. It is recommended to upgrade to your newer Kernel like from 11/2003 3 as well as the MTRR management 4 held by Intel P6/AMD K7. With the IFS there may be added the driver to compliment FAT 32 and ext2fs support. To use sound cards from Creative Labs there is also a ported Open source driver 6, support for current graphics boards comes while using Display Doctor 7.07 inside IBM unique 7 of SciTech. This is really a lite version from the entire driver software licensed for IBM to offer it to everyone OS/2 users at no cost. If the correct driver software for your available graphics board isnt contained,
only an overall driver software programs are used with only slowest standard functions to deliver the highest compatibility for those unknown graphics boards. But if you dont use OS/2 as platform to experiment with games you'll not be able to state any performance deficits. Otherwise the always current full version of SciTech remains indispensable.
The online was established using a standard 56K modem with standard AT instructions. The contained Web browser is usually to old for modern use with the web and will be replaced by an alternative plus much more current browser. Otherwise many sites are not displayed correct. If the file size will not matter it is possible to download the Mozilla approx. 14 MByte or Opera browser approx. 5 MByte for OS/2.
To play sound files the PM123 player and MMAudio pack offers its services for media access. The audio format MP3 is supported directly, support for OGG Vorbis and FLAC can also be available as Plugin. Video files inside AVI and MPEG format are played best together with the Warpmedia player. This also offers DivX support but only to the expired DivX format in version 3.11. Maybe it exists a codec which makes it also possible to look at current DivX videos.
With the Odin project there is a Win32 emulator that produces the use of Windows programs under OS/2 possible through various ways. Comparably with Wine under Linux, merely a fraction of most applications for Windows are supported.
OS/2 Warp release 4.0 rev. 9.023, original version 1994
OS/2 Warp release 4.5 rev. 14.096cW4, incl. updates nearly 2003
complete utilizable, DMA mode
nearly 1600x1200 with 16 Mio. colours
With the use in the newer setup floppy disks mentionened above previously large harddisks are utilizably as well as the desired partition is usually selected to the installation. This should be selected to start with partition C and marked as installation destination. If you dont be careful about this, data loss from the just active partition is usually happen. OS/2 Warp 4 is established on this example since the 3rd primary partition with 2.0 GB of size. The booting manager is installed only in this particular one. As filesystem you need to certainly choose HPFS to create long file names possible and steer clear of installation aborts by to short file names.

No links. But get a used copy off ebay - - or if you need to steal it, get a duplicate of Limewire and download it. ecs - - a far more expensive and much less reliable version is usually there around the peer network with the taking.

despite what letoured says, eCS is usually a new and updated OS/2.
It reaches least as stable as OS/2, but I believe it is more stable indeed.
It is really way less costly than any OS/2 you could potentially buy today aside from second-hand copies on eBay, it truly is in fact impossible to obtain OS/2 from IBM today and not using a highly expensive IBM subscription.
If you intend to learn more about letoured with the exceptional friend whose name noone dares to dicuss, and understand what I m referring to here, please head to /

OS/2, vintage PC computing, and random musings
OS/2 Warp 4 was published in September 1996. Its codename was Merlin, perhaps as the Star Trek themed Warpwas now part from the official product name. This was not really a particularly happy time for OS/2. By the time Warp 4 was launched, the IBM management had already thought we would de-emphasizeOS/2. IBM saw how they could not take on Windows 95, not inside a world controlled by Microsoft.
The disastrous failure of OS/2 for PowerPC spelled the end in the PSP Personal Systems Products division in Boca Raton, Florida. After the consumer-oriented push from the Warp 3 era, IBM now made a decision to focus on their core market again, corporate customers. Warp 4 premiered at a time if your Internet would have been a major force high was much talk of nebulous network computing.

OS/2 Warp 4.0 takes a boot disk to get started on up for setup. Boot disk is provided inside download.
Boot your personal computer or emulator with all the Installation diskette. It will request you to swap disks till the machine is booted in to the setup program. Installation is pretty straightforward and definately will work in any modern emulator. In addition, this OS will are powered by anything newer when compared to a 486 before a P4. im guessing there isnt any workaround.
Tried to download OS/2 2.1 with no success 4-5 times.
Time ago, I was lucky using this OS!!
Today Im using OS/2 Warp 4 on bare hardware i7core, 2GB ram, Matrox G450 PCI Dual Head with drivers rev. 2.58 and making use of an SMP Kernel 14.062SMP. Was an effort, with large amount of trial and error, large amount of files downloaded, however it is was worth, yet it run, and is particularly AMAZING FAST. And without needing any virtualization, but I must say, VirtualBox is really a BIG HELP a the begin, as Warp 4 need a minimum of Fixpack 15 lot other files to figure on today machines. And with an SMP Kernel large amount of other files and BIG patience, IT REALLY ROCK like not one other OS today marketed. Sadly that IBM marketing for OS/2 was the BADIEST EVER SEEN. Into my heart and my hardware, OS/2 should have a place, way too long I live, this really is my OS/2 RULEZZ!!!:-

Microsoft had absolutely nothing to do with OS/2 version 2 or beyond. Microsoft abandoned OS/2 after v1.3.

The installation was easy and quick, with Virtual PC.
2nd disk of 3 disk1 cannot find, despite if I replaced it from another disk. Does anyone have got ideas why? I checked the trail and dpath in
I find the following error an internet to install with VirtualBox in Linux.
VT-x/AMD-V hardware acceleration just isn't available on your whole body. Certain guests OS/2 and QNX require this feature and can fail to boot without.
im guessing theres not any workaround.
Time ago, I was lucky with this particular OS !!
Today Im using OS/2 Warp 4 on bare hardware i7core, 2GB ram, Matrox G450 PCI Dual Head with drivers rev. 2.58 and taking advantage of an SMP Kernel 14.062SMP. Was an efforts, with great deal of trial and error, large amount of files downloaded, however its was worth, yet it run, and is particularly AMAZING FAST. And without making use of any virtualization, but I must say, VirtualBox is really a BIG HELP a the begin, as Warp 4 need a minimum of Fixpack 15 lot other files to be effective on today machines. And with an SMP Kernel wide range of other files and BIG patience, IT REALLY ROCK like hardly any other OS today marketed. Sadly that IBM marketing for OS/2 was the BADIEST EVER SEEN. Into my heart and my hardware, OS/2 can have a place, such a long time I live, that is my OS/2 RULEZZ!!!:-

The best method I found to work with this would be to extract each IMZ files into IMA after which extract the IMA into original files. Start while using and then proceed on. EACH IMA file will extract into subfolder. The files in each subfolder will easily fit into a 60 minute.44 disk. Need 23 newlyformatted disk.
I use a Mac and employ the Emulator QQEMU. I renamed the Files into and unzipped all files. Because QQEMU are not able to use IMG Files i renamed them into
The Installation worked with no Problem.

I used winimage to convert files The names in the images were wrong, if the installer requests disk 1 I used disk 3 then when it requests for disk 2 I used disk 4 and so forth. When the installer requires disk 16 use disk 1, then when it wants disk 17 use disk 2. To start the setup boot on the Install disk.
