Note: Linux Mint isn't going to use digital signatures and won't register to become certified by Microsoft to be a secure OS. As such, it won't boot with SecureBoot. If your product is using secureBoot, turn it off.
Note: Linux Mint places its boot files in/boot/efi/EFI/ubuntu to operate around this bug. This isn't going to prevent the installing multiple releases or distributions, or dual-boots between Ubuntu and Linux Mint, as they possibly can all be bootable through the same grub menu.
The open-source drivers within Linux Mint tend not to support some with the NVIDIA cards perfectly. You might experience black screens, freezes or kernel panics.
The easiest way to solve the problem is to keep trying, until it eventually works. Once the strategy is installed:
With these drivers the device should certainly stable.
If youre utilizing an Optimus card, youve no more to do. Upon reboot, a systray icon should arrive indicating which GPU currently is active. Click on it to exchange GPUs.
Note: If regardless how many times you try, you simply can't boot or install using the open-source drivers, try one with the following solutions:
At the boot menu with the live DVD/USB, press Tab to edit the boot arguments and add nomodeset in the end from the line.
Remove quiet splash - - from that same line.
Append 1 in the end in the line.
To boot Linux Mint 17.2 on CPU which will not officially support PAE Pentium M processors as an illustration, please utilize Start Linux Mint with PAE forced option in the boot menu.
When while using option to encrypt your house directory, an upstream issue within the installer ends in the Swap partition not being configured properly.
If VLC will not find your DVD player, click Media-Open Disc, and specify/dev/sr0 as being the disc device.
If youre experiencing complications with KDE apps Okular, Gwenview, run this command:
Note: These issues usually do not affect the KDE edition. A regression in KDE 4.14 prevents these applications from working fine out with the box outside KDE.

Linux Mint is almost certainly one from the most popular desktop distributions, therefore it s always a lrage benefit when a version is released. This time around it s Linux Mint 17. This review covers the Cinnamon version of Linux Mint 17, but most of it also relates to the MATE version while using exception of changes on the MATE 1.8 desktop.
As in which desktop environment you should utilize, I think it just gets down in your own personal preference. MATE is often a more traditional desktop while Cinnamon features a more modern feel going without running shoes. If you aren t sure what type you might like better, my advice is always to try both of them and then suggest your decision.

The Software Sources menu has got improved usability and some interface tweaks. You ll experience a warning now against usage of backport and romeo components. That should prove useful for those who aren t sure what they are but want to experiment anyway.
The welcome menu is faster and doesn't use webkit. While I m always glad to view improvements, I i never thought it was slow before. Did anybody else? It seemed pretty zippy in my experience in past releases, but maybe I just wasn t attending to.
The System Settings menu may be tweaked to incorporate subcategories, together with some other interface changes. You can now see all settings constantly, you don t need to change between normal and advanced modes. This can be a change I m very glad to see mainly because it has the possibility to cut down on confusion among newer users have been t acquainted with System Settings.

Have been an enormous fan since about mint 11 or 12. I used mint 13 for gaming. eve online via playonlinux/wine steam gaming. Just upgraded to mint 17.1 cinnamon and WOW. Aside from a flash player issue I should sort, this thing is amazing for gaming. One example is World of thunder. It plays like dream on highest settings.
Crap mother board with DDR2 ram and slow 5400rpm drive. The good bits would be the 750w power source and an ATI HD 7990 dual core gaphics card that's way over kill. This was an old business dell vostro 200 dual core that has been being dumped and I buy it for nix pun intended.
Good to determine the drivers within the repositories being up-to-date. Installing these worked beatifully first-time.
Still ought to test desktop switching on 17.1 although 13 was awsome with this. Faster plus much more pleasant then this old alt tab in w1nd0ws. Fullscreen game during one deskop, teamspeak etc on another a web browser within the next.
It incorporates a real console gaming feel with it too.
This could be the best gamining experience I have had in over 25 years or so in gaming. Oh and I also put it to use at work also. Can t will have fun

I like mint Ubuntu the U was my first and from now on it is my home when I get frustrated then run back although Debian I have a fondness for if I partition it correctly in addition to some rolling release style ones which enables it to t neglect the most packed Ubuntu derivative Ultimate edition by Thee, I am a distro hopper but, I found one I might calm down with Robolinux only dilemma is I have to get connected Hard Wire-ethernet I mean. Last Ultimate Ed. was prefer that really dissapointing, I like Linux review blogs.

have difficulty in printing, left edge take off, on two hp printers.
First of thank-you for the great review. As I posted within your Lubuntu review, I am running three versions of Mint on 4 different machines. Each one feels so similar to your others which the actual window management environment doesn t really matter. It could be the elegance that Mint is weaved together, whatever version, which make it outstanding.
After using every varient of Windows and OSX, and being from the software business for thirty years, I can honestly point out that Mint isn't only the most beneficial Linux version that I have ever tried, yet it's also perhaps the very best OS I have ever used.
Id appreciate some guidance I ran an upgrade on my small Lenovo Ideapad which has been running Mint 15. I ran the update from 15 to 16, after which immediately from 16 to 17. When I boot up in 17, I get on the login screen and am prompted to go into my login and after that password I did not have this enabled within the 15 install. My login and password are rejected as incorrect so I can;t even manage the front door.
Console-login as the normal administrator user.
Do sudo adduser foobar and answer the basic questions what exactly is your name what's your number?
now however I receive an error message Failed to load session cinnamon, and am only given the solution to log out.
I d appreciate some guidance I ran an upgrade on my own Lenovo Ideapad which has been running Mint 15. I ran the update from 15 to 16, and immediately from 16 to 17. When I boot up in 17, I get towards the login screen and am prompted to go into my login after which password I did not have this enabled inside the 15 install. My login and password are rejected as incorrect so I can;t even pass over the front door. Any suggestions?
If only I could install this. I m tried inatallation 5 times on my small MacBook Pro, running Mavericks. Using VirtualBox, which has already established no problems installing other OSs that I wanted to utilise.
This Linux Mint 17 is like a bucking horse it always does the Installer Crash before celebrate it to your end.
And if this asks if I wish to send a bug report, that screen never shows.
After Googling the endless crashes, I came towards the conclusion, this thing isn t ready for prime time. This would be the ONLY os that refuses to put in.

This is extremely unusual and shouldn t be happening. I have seen Linux Mint 17 in Virtualbox with a colleagues machine although that has been on a Windows box.
In my case I finished up finding another Brother Driver that worked. Found how the Brother 9600 helps to make the 7420 work as it did before. Not all functions but it really prints fine. Think I found the fix using a post somewhere. Anyway I tried to have an HP printer to be effective but never found a motorist for it that may work.
December 13, 2014 at 3:28 am
For Brother printers, head to Software Manager and install all appropriate Brother support. This is employed by my Brother MFC-210C. Doing this adds an awful lot of Brother printers towards the standard printer install choices. Should I have another printer, I would try exactly the same augmentation for your brand in Software Manager. Some printers are notably Linux friendly so keep that planned when choosing another one. HP is extremely Linux Friendly and it has augmented support in Software Manager too.
On every version Mint proves what Ubuntu should are already.
In my experience whichever system I ll install or use live cd mint will work from your box.
Mint 17 Cinnamon is fantastic. I tried KDE and xfce Cinnamon is my preference. It can be a completely professional OS. I are already running Mint 15/16 on the Desktop and laptop, as my primary OS, for just a year. I prefer it to Windows, but do work with a dual boot and VM to operate Windows if I should. I basically never have to utilize Windows, and I don t really would like to. Windows is ok, but Cinnamon 17 is full featured and stable. The software manager is can search it for solid free open source software with easy installs. It very reliably runs as my music server. It is lightweight and fast. I occasionally try other systems, but I usually do not even foresee abandoning Mint Cinnamon. It s too solid and too easy running. My girlfriend uses it, without the need of issues.
I have installed Linux Mint 17. It is very rewarding except can t get my printer to figure. I have an MFC 7420 Brother printer. It worked within the previous verson of Mint that I had though I had to make use of the drivers for your MFC 9600. I ve tried the newest recommended drivers plus it shows the printer will there be but doesn t print. I ve tried the 9600 driver without change. Does precisely the same thing by using an HP printer I ve tried using. It shows the printer and queries etc as if it turned out there however it doesn t print. I have a text file that problem solving made for reporting. The trouble shooter program said there were no explainable reason for doing this not working. I don t learn how to send that text file here or where you can send it. Can somebody get me an email address contact info to forward the problem solving file to?
Did anyone are you getting you outside assistance with this? I m a novice to Linux and am running Mint 17 and achieving the exact same issue with my Brother MFC-J475DW. I downloaded the drivers and also the printer can be seen, if I probe the printer throughout the IP address the LCD around the printer lights up nonetheless it never receives printed request. Any guidance is appreciated.

See my solution Nic above. I utilized to download the motive force software in the printer sites but Software Manager has proven being the better avenue for me personally.
I ve been using it since 2 or 3 days after it s release. I usually start in the RC but simply didn t develop the time within this release. I find that it is hard to believe that Linux Mint keeps getting better and much better, most distros would i want to down at this point and I might have moved on.
Using Linux Mint 17 now like a dual boot system with Windows 8. Very impressed with LM17, looks good, comfortable to wear, fast and sharp responding, excellent selection of softwares included, just like the essential Libre Office the same as MS Office and including some video editing software Kino and OpenShot all without any course! XP users could fine Linux Mint a helpful MS replace home and office use.
How have you managed to dual boot LM 17 Cinnamon with Win 8? I failed miserably while I had done some investigation. There seems being no definite means of doing it.
On another machine it turned out easy to dual boot LM 17 with Win 7.
Mint 17Win 8 dual boot. Bit tricky. The key may be the BIOS settings, which has to be set to legacy boot or something similar. My original M17 dual boot installation would only boot into Win8. There were no BIOS adjustments readily available for legacy mode. I upgraded the BIOS and hey presto GRUB was active on startup and I could select M17 or Win8. It would appear which the BIOS upgrade enabled legacy boot in my case.
There is usually a dirty clumsy work around in case you can t set the BIOS parameters always start using the MINT 17 installation disk in and select boot from hard drive inside opening installation screen, that can find the boot sector for Mint 17 on your own hard drive and load Mint 17. For Win8 leave the Mint17 installation disc out and reboot it'll go into Win8
Thank you for your. Yours is about the clearest instructions I have found.
Great review. Thanks! I like a whole lot Linux Mint. I ve used Ubuntu and Linux Mint since 2012. They ve greatly improved. Particularly this release may be the best one to date.
