VMFS Recovery will not recover deleted snapshots inside way as advertised.
I experienced a very bad knowledge about Diskinternals. More specifically, using the VMFS Recovery software. I was led to believe this product could recover deleted snapshots, however, that it was unable to recuperate the snapshots and I needed to use competitor software to execute the recovery.

When I presented the information to your Diskinternals support team, we were holding very confrontational and refused to help you with this case inside a professional manner.
Suffice it to convey, I will never buy another product out of this company again and I will share my exposure to any and all of IT Consultants I are exposed to.
Everything relating to this software didnt work right. First, I needed to download it 3 times to obtain a decent copy that may actually install correctly. It locked up several times for the first install, then started repeating the issue about the second install.

After generating the index, it wouldnt or couldnt display the info! I tried many times on 2 different drives. Exasperated after fighting many for about a couple weeks!

Like, this person has built computer clusters. He said nothing may very well be done.
I then took it on the IT manager within work. He tried various things for several days by using a linux system, and said his only hope is always to copy and image on the whole disk onto another, or it would wreck it a step forward. This kept crashing, and inside end he lost the battle.
I then took it home, found this easy freeware, downloaded it and bingo, I could see everything around the drive and copy becoming simply since you would from any USB stick. I cant believe I was in a position to salvage my 2Tb importance of data.
I am never a computer person, all I did was go ahead and take SATA cable away from the back of my DVD drive and plug it in the broken HDD, and download this method. So happy!

This page is approximately optimizing and tuning Linux based systems for server oriented tasks. Most from the info presented here Ive used myself, and possess found it being beneficial. Ive attemptedto avoid the well tread ground hdparm, turning off hostname lookups in apache, etc as that info is simple to find elsewhere.
Some times when you might wish to apply a number of benchmarking, high traffic websites, or regarding any load spike say, an online transfered virus is pegging your servers with bogus requests
Benchmark performance can often be heavily depending on disk I/O performace. So getting just as much disk I/O as it can be is the actual key.
Depending for the array, as well as the disks used, plus the controller, you might want to try software raid. It is difficult to beat software raid performace over a modern cpu using a fast disk controller.
The easiest approach to configure software raid is to perform it in the install. If you make use of the gui installer, you will find options within the disk partion screen to produce a md or multiple-device, linux talk to get a software raid partion. You will need to create partions on each with the drives of type linux raid, and after that after creating these partions, create a whole new partion, say /test, and select md since its type. Then you may select every one of the partions that needs to be part of it, in addition to the raid type. For pure performance, RAID 0 is the strategy to go.
Note that automatically, I belive that you are limited to 12 drives within a MD device, so you might be limited to this. If the drives are fast enough, that you should sufficent to acquire 100 MB/s pretty consistently.
One thing to bear in mind is which the position of an partion on the hardrive gives you performance implications. Partions that will get stored with the very outer edge of the drive are usually significantly faster than those for the inside. A good benckmarking trick is with RAID across several drives, but only make use of a very small partion within the outside from the disk. This give both consistent performance, as well as the best performance. On most moden drives, or least drives using ZCAV Zoned Constant Angular Velocity, this will be sectors using the lowest address, aka, the very first partions. For a solution to see the differences illustrated, start to see the ZCAV page.
This is simply a summary of software RAID configuration. More detailed info might be found elsewhere such as Software-RAID-HOWTO, and also the docs and man pages on the raidtools package.
Some from the default kernel paramaters for system performance are geared more towards workstation performance that file server/large disk io sort of operations. The most critical of these will be the bdflush value in/proc/sys/vm/bdflush
you change these values by simply echoing the modern values on the file. This takes effect immediately. However, it should be reinitilized at each and every kernel boot. The simplest way to do that is to put this command into the finish of
Also, for pure file server applications like web and samba servers, it is likely you want to disable the atime option within the filesystem. This disabled updating the atime value to the file, which indicates that this last time information was accessed. Since this info isnt very useful with this situation, to cause extra disk hits, its typically disabled. To try this, just edit/etc/fstab and add notime to be a mount selection for the filesystem.
With these file system options, a superb raid setup, as well as the bdflush values, filesystem performace must be suffiecent.
The disk i/o elevators is an additional kernel tuneable that might be tweaked for improved disk i/o in some instances.
SCSI tuning is extremely dependent around the particular scsi cards and drives in questions. The most effective variable if it comes to SCSI card performace is tagged command queueing.
For the Adaptec aic7xxx seriers cards 2940s, 7890s, 160s, etc this may be enabled using a module option like:
This enabled the default tagged command queing for the first device, about the first 4 scsi ids.
options aic7xxxaic7xxxtaginfo:24.24.24.24.24.24
You probably would like to check the driver documentation to your particular scsi modules to find out more.
On systems which might be consistently conducting a large quantity of disk I/O, tuning the disk I/O elevators can be useful. This is often a 2.4 kernel feature that permits some treatments for latency vs throughput by changing just how disk io elevators operate.
This sticks to changing the length of time the I/O scheduler will let a request sit inside the queue before it needs to be handled. Since the I/O scheduler can collapse some request together, having a lots of items inside the queue means more could be cooalesced, which may increase throughput.
Changing the max latency on items inside the queue means that you can trade disk i/o latency for throughput, and the other way around.
The tool/sbin/elvtune section of util-linux permits you to change these max latency values. Lower values means less latency, but additionally less thoughput. The values is usually set to the read and write queues seperately.
To evaluate which the current settings are, just issue:
substituting the approriate device needless to say. Default values are 8192 for read, and 16384 for writes.
Note these particular values are by way of example purposes only, and will not be recomended tuning values. That depends around the situation.
The units of such values are simply sectors of writes before reads are allowed. The kernel attempts to complete all reads, then all writes, etc in the attempt to prevent disk io mode switching, which could be slow. So this means that you can alter the length of time it waits before switching.
One way for getting an idea with the effectiveness of the changes would be to monitor the creation of isostat - d - x DEVICE. The avgrq-sz and avgqu-sz values average sized request and average queue length, see man page for iostat needs to be affected by these elevator changes. Lowering the latency should result in the avqrq-sz to search down, by way of example.
See the elvtune man page for more information. Some info when this feature was introduced can also be at
This info contributed by Arjan van de Ven.
Most benchmarks benifit heavily from ensuring the NICs available are well supported, which has a well written driver. Examples include eepro100, tulips, newish 3com cards, and acenic and sysconect gigabit cards.
Making sure them are running fully duplex mode can be very often essential that you benchmark performace. Depending about the networking hardware used, some from the cards might not autosense properly and might not exactly run full duplex automagically.
Many cards include module options that will be employed to force they into full duplex mode. Some examples for common cards include
Though full duplex increases the best efficiency, Ive seen some circumstances where setting them to half duplex will in fact increase thoughput, particulary in cases the location where the data flow is heavily one sided.
If you would imagine your in the situation where that might help, I would suggest having a go and benchmarking it.
For servers which are serving up huge variety of concurent sessions, you will discover some tcp options which will probabaly be enabled. With a large of clients doing their finest to eliminate the server, its probabaly not uncommon to the server to obtain 20000 or even more open sockets.
In order to optimize TCP performace just for this situation, I would suggest tuning this parameters.
Allows more local ports to be presented. Generally not really a issue, but within a benchmarking scenario you regularly need more ports available. A common example is clients running ab or
In true of firewalls, or some other servers doing NAT or masquerading, you would possibly not be capable to use the full port range in this way, because in the need for high ports for usage in NAT.
Increasing the number of memory linked to socket buffers may improve performance. Things like NFS for example, or apache setups with large buffer configured can benefit with this.
This raises the volume of memory readily available for socket input queues. The wmem values perform the same for output queues.
Note: With 2.4.x kernels, these values were made to autotune fairly well, and a few people suggest just instead changing the values in:
There are three values here, min default max.
These reduce the number of work the TCP stack has to complete, so is frequently helpful with this situation.
Open tcp sockets, and things such as apache are susceptible to opening a large volume of file descriptors. The default amount of available FD is 4096, but this may ought to be upped because of this scenario.
The theorectial limit is roughly hundreds of file descriptors, though Ive never been able for getting close to this many open.
Id suggest doubling the default, and looking the test. If you still exhaust file descriptors, double it again.
Note: On 2.4 kernels, the inode-max entry is not needed.
You probabaly need to add the crooks to so they get set on each boot.
There are definitely more than a number of ways to create these changes sticky. In Red Hat Linux, you are able to you and setting and save these values.
If you obtain errors from the variety Unable to look at file descriptor you definately must up these values.
You can examine the belongings in/proc/sys/fs/file-nr to determine the quantity of allocated file handles, the quantity of file handles becoming used, along with the max volume of file handles.
For heavily used web servers, or machines that spawn off tons of processes, you probabaly desire to up the limit of processes with the kernel.
Also, both the.2 kernel itself includes a max process limit. The default values just for this are 2560, but a kernel recompile usually takes this up to 4000. This is often a limitation inside 2.2 kernel, and continues to be removed from 2.3/2.4.
If your drained how many task the kernel can handle automagically, you could possibly have to rebuild the kernel after editing:
usr/src/linux/include/linux/tasks.h
Then recompile the kernel.
Note: This process limit is gone inside the 2.4 kernel series.
Limitations on threads are tightly stuck just using both file descriptor limits, and process limits.
Under Linux, threads are counted as processes, so any limits for the number of processes will also apply to threads. In a heavily threaded app as being a threaded TCP engine, or perhaps a java server, it is possible to quickly use up all your threads.
For starters, you want for getting an idea the quantity of threads you may open. The thread-limit util mentioned inside Tuning Utilities section is probabaly as effective as any.
The step one to improving the possible variety of threads is for making sure you've got boosted any process limits as i've already explained.
There are few things which could limit the quantity of threads, including process limits, memory limits, mutex/semaphore/shm/ipc limits, and compiled in thread limits. For most cases, the procedure limit will be the first that you run into, then this compiled in thread limits, next the memory limits.
To raise the limits, you've got to recompile glibc. Oh fun!. And the patch is actually two lines!. Woohoo!
Mon Sep 4 19:37:42 2000./linuxthreads/sysdeps/unix/sysv/linux/bits/locallim.h Mon Sep 4 19:37:56 2000 -64, 7 64, 7 define POSIXTHREADTHREADSMAX 64 - define PTHREADTHREADSMAX 1024 define PTHREADTHREADSMAX 8192 - - Mon Sep 4 19:36:58 2000./linuxthreads/internals.h Mon Sep 4 19:37:23 2000 -330, 7 330, 7 THREADSELF implementation is utilized, this should be a power of two plus a multiple of PAGESIZE. ifndef STACKSIZE - define STACKSIZE 2 1024 1024 define STACKSIZE 64 PAGESIZE endif
Now just patch glibc, rebuild, and do the installation. ;- If you've a package based system, I seriously suggest making a different package and ultizing it.
Some info how to make this happen are They describe how you can increase the variety of threads so Java apps are able to use them.
A good resource on NFS tuning on linux could be the linux NFS HOW-TO. Most with this info is gleaned following that.
Try using NFSv3 if that you are currently using NFSv2. There may be very significant performance increases using this type of change.
Increasing the read write block size. This is done using the rsize and wsize mount options. They need on the mount options utilised by the NFS clients. Values of 4096 and 8192 reportedly increase performance alot. But begin to see the notes from the HOWTO about experimenting and measuring the performance implications. The limits on these are typically 8192 for NFSv2 and 32768 for NFSv3
Another approach should be to increase the quantity of nfsd threads running. This is normally controlled with the nfsd init script. On Red Hat Linux machines, the worthiness RPCNFSDCOUNT within the nfs init script controls this value. The best strategy to determine if you'd like this should be to experiment. The HOWTO mentions a solution to determin thread usage, but that doesnt seem supported in most kernels.
Another good tool when getting some handle on NFS server performance is nfsstat. This util reads the details in/proc/net/rpc/nfsd and displays it in a very somewhat readable format. Some info created for tuning Solaris, but ideal for its description from the nfsstat format
Make sure you starting a lot of initial daemons if you need good benchmark scores.
Note: Starting a massive number of
The MaxRequestPerChild must be bumped up if that you are sure that a
One from the best resources on tuning these values, for app servers, would be the modperl performance tuning documentation.
Apache sets a maximum variety of possible processes at compile time. It is defined to 256 automatically, but with this kind of scenario, may be exceeded.
To change this, you will should chage the hardcoded limit within the apache source code, and recompile it. An example with the change is below:
Fri Aug 6 20:11:14 1999 apache1.3.6/src/include/
To make useage of the many apaches however, you will also must boost the quantity of processes support, at least for two.2 kernels. See the section on kernel process limits for home elevators increasing this.
The biggest scalability trouble with apache, 1.3.x versions at the least, is its label of using one process per connection. In times when there huge amounts of concurent connections, this may require a great deal resources. These resources can incorporate RAM, schedular slots, capability to grab locks, database connections, file descriptors, while others.
In cases when each connection requires a long time to perform, this can be only compunded. Connections may be slow to accomplish because of considerable amounts of cpu or i/o usage in dynamic apps, large files being transfered, or simply talking to clients on slow links.
There are a few strategies to mitigate this. The basic idea being to get back heavyweight apache processes from being forced to handle slow to perform connections.
If the servers are serving plenty of static files images, videos, pdfs, etc, a standard approach is always to serve these files off a separate server. This could possibly be a very light apache setup, or any many cases, such as t
For purely static content, some from the other smaller more lightweight web servers may offer very good performance. They arent nearly as powerful or as flexible as apache, but also for very specific performance crucial tasks, they may be a big win.
If you will need even more ExtremeWebServerPerformance, you probabaly want to require a look at TUX, compiled by Ingo Molnar. This would be the current world record holder for SpecWeb99. It probabaly owns the authority to be known as the worlds fastest web server.
For servers which can be serving dynamic content, or ssl content, an even better approach is always to employ a reverse-proxy. Typically, this will done with either apaches modproxy, or Squid. There may be several advantages because of this type of configuration, including content caching, load balancing, plus the prospect of moving slow connections to lighter weight servers.
The easiest approache is probabaly to utilize modproxy plus the ProxyPass directive to give content to an alternative server. modproxy supports a diploma of caching that may offer a significant performance boost. But an additional is that because the proxy server and also the web server are likely to get a very fast interconnect, the internet server can rapidly serve up large content, freeing up a apache process, why the proxy slowly feeds out the information to clients. This may be further enhanced by increasing the quantity of socket buffer memory thats for that kernel. See the section on tcp tuning for facts about this.
One in the most frustrating thing for the user of your website, is for getting connection refused error messages. With apache, the regular cause of this is made for the quantity of concurent connections to exceed the variety of available
The apache ListenBacklog paramater enables you to specify what backlog paramater is placed to listen. By default on linux, this is usually as high as 128.
Increasing this enables a limited quantity of
There are a few experimental patches from SGI that accelerate apache. More info at:
I havent really stood a chance to test the SGI patches yet, but Ive been told they may be pretty effective.
Depending about the type of tests, there many tweaks it is possible to do to samba to increase its performace within the default. The default is the best for general purpose file sharing, but also for extreme uses, you will find a handful of tweaks.
The first one is always to rebuild it with mmap support. In cases where that you are serving up a large volume of small files, this appears to be particularly useful. You just should add a - -with-mmap on the configure line.
One from the better helpful information for tuning samba may be the Using Samba book from Oreily. The chapter on performance tuning can be acquired online.
The most crucial tuning aspect for OpenLDAP is deciding what attributes you need to build indexes on.
cachesize 10000 dbcachesize 100000 sizelimit 10000 loglevel 0 dbcacheNoWsync index cn, uid index uidnumber index gid index gidnumber index mail
If you add the next parameters to before entering the info into your database, they will all get indexed and gratification will increase.
Some applications, databases specifically, sometimes need considerable amounts of SHM segments and semaphores. The default limit for the volume of shm segments is 128 for just two.2.
This limit is set in the couple of places within the kernel, and a modification from the kernel source along with a recompile to boost them.

Theoretically, the SHMIDBITS can go as much as 11. The rule is SHMIDBITS SHMIDXBITS need to be
To double the amount default value.
The best approach to see what the actual values are, would be to issue the command:
The variety of ptys and ttys with a box can often be a limiting factor for things such as login servers and database servers.
On Red Hat Linux 7.x, the default limit on ptys is defined to 2048 for i686 and athlon kernels. Standard i386 and other alike kernels default to 256 ptys.
The config directive CONFIGUNIX98PTYCOUNT defaults to 256, but might be set of up to 2048. For 2048 ptys to get supported, the worth of UNIX98PTYMAJORCOUNT must be set to 8 in include/linux/major.h
With the latest device number scheme and allocations, the maximum volume of ptys is 2048.
Lies, damn lies, and statistics.
But in addition to that, a good pair of benchmarking utilities are sometimes very attractive doing system tuning work. It is impossible to scan real world situations, but that isnt in truth the goal of the good benchmark. A good benchmark typically attempts to measure the performance of a single particular thing very accurately. If you understand exactly what the benchmarks are performing, they might be very useful tools.
Bonnie has become around forever, along with the numbers it generates are meaningful to a lot of people. If nothing else, its good tool for producing info to share with you with others. This is often a pretty common utility for testing driver performance. Its only drawback would it be sometimes requires the application of huge datasets on large memory machines to have useful results, but I suppose that goes using the territory.
Check Doug Ledfords set of benchmarks for more information about Bonnie. There is a somwhat newer version of Bonnie called Bonnie that fixes several bugs, and includes a several extra tests.
My personal favorite disk io benchmarking utility is dbench. It is built to simulate the disk io load of any system when running the NetBench benchmark suite. It seems to try and do an excellent job at making the many drive lights blink like mad. Always a fantastic sign.
A nice simple
A the? ftp benchmarking utility. Designed to simulate real life ftp usage large quantity of clients, throttles connections to modem speeds, etc. Handy. Also includes the useful dklimits utility.
A multithread disk io benchmarking utility. Seems to accomplish an a fantastic job at pounding for the disks. Comes with a few useful scripts for generating reports and graphs.
dt does a good deal. disk io, process creation, async io, etc.
A tcp/udp benchmarking app. Useful for getting a perception of max network bandwidth of an device. Tends to get more accurate than looking to guestimate with ftp or another protocols.
Netperf is often a benchmark that could be employed to measure the performance of the many different types of networking. It provides tests for both unidirecitonal throughput, and end-to-end latency. The environments currently measureable by netperf include: TCP and UDP via BSD Sockets, DLPI, Unix Domain Sockets, Fore ATM API, HiPPI.
Info offered by Bill Hilf.Autobench is really a simple Perl script for automating the procedure of benchmarking a web site server and conducting a comparative test of two different web servers. The script can be a wrapper around
Standard, instead of so standard system monitoring tools that is usually useful when seeking to tune a method.
This util is part with the procps package, and will provide plenty of useful info when diagnosing performance problems.
The interesting numbers here are the 1st one, this could be the number on the process that are about the run queue. This value shows the quantity of process are willing to be executed, but is not ran on the moment because other process have to finish. For lightly loaded systems, that is almost never above 1-3, and numbers consistently more than 10 indicate the equipment is getting pounded.
Other interseting values include the device numbers for in and cs. The in value is the quantity of interupts per second a process is getting. A system doing a great deal of network or disk I/o should have high values here, as interupts are generated everytime something is read or written to your disk or network.
The cs value is the amount of context switches per second. A context switch occurs when the kernel needs to take off in the executable code for the program beyond memory, and switch in another. Its actually a lot more complicated than that, but thats the essential idea. Lots of context swithes could be unhealthy, mainly because it takes some fairly large variety of cycles to performa a context swithch, so if you happen to be doing plenty of them, that you are spending all of your time chaining jobs and never actually doing any work. I think you can all realize that concept.
Since this document is primarily related to network servers, the netstat command can frequently be handy. It can show status of incoming and outgoing sockets, which often can give very handy information about the status of an network server.
The - p options tells it to try to evaluate which program provides the socket open, that's often handy info. For example, someone nmaps their system and wants to understand what is using port 666 for instance. Running netstat - pa will disclose its satand running on that tcp port.
One on the most twisted, but useful invocations is:
This will disclose a sorted report on how many sockets have been in each connection state. For example:
Okay, so everybody knows about ps. But Ill just highlight among my favorite options:
ps - eo pid, %cpu, vsz, args, wchan
Shows every process, their pid, % of cpu, memory size, name, and what syscall they're currently executing. Nifty.
Some simple utilities which come in handy when you are performing performance tuning.
a simple util to look for the acutally amount of file descriptors available, ephemeral ports available, and poll-able sockets. Handy. Be warned it can go on a while to own if you can find a large amount of fds available, as it can try to open that numerous files, then unlinkt them.
a tiny util for determining the amount of file descriptors available.
A util for determining the variety of pthreads a system can make use of. This and fd-count are generally from it tuning page for Volano chat, a multithread java based chat server.
Check out your c10k problem page especially, but the full site has plenty of useful tuning info.
Site organized by Rik Van Riel and also a few others. Probabaly the most effective linux specific system tuning page.

Careful analysis and benchmarking has demonstrated that server will respond positively to being acted approriate music. For the regular case, this might be about anything, however for high performane servers, a far more careful choice would need to be made.
The industry standard for pumping up a server has long been Crazy Train, By Ozzy Ozbourne. While this is proven time and time again to offer increased performance, in many circumstances I recomdend alternatives.
A classic case may be the co-located server. Nothing like packing increase pride and joy and shipping it to strange faraway locations like Sunnyvale and Herndon, VA. Its enough to generate a server homesick, so I prefer to suggest selecting a piece of music which will remind them of home and tide them over till the bigger servers stop picking with them. For servers from North Carolina, I love to play the entirety of feet in mud again by Geezer Lake. Nothing like some really good old NC style avant-metal-alterna-prog.
Comentary, controverys, chatter. chit-chat. Chat and irc servers have their own own unique group of problems. I discover the polyrythmic and incessant restatement of intent behind Elephant Talk by King Crimson a good method to bend those servers back in shape.
btw, Xach says Crazy Train contains the best guitar solo ever.
Folks who have sent me new info, corrected info, or simply sat still of sufficient length for me to ask them a great deal of questions.

The tool/sbin/elvtune component of util- linux permits you to change these max latency values. Lower values means less latency, and also less thoughput. The values is usually set for that read and write queues seperately.
A good resource on this really is Tunings The Linux Kernels Memory.
