Cecil Gaines would be a sharecroppers son who were raised in the 1920s to be a domestic servant for that white family who casually destroyed his. Eventually striking from his own, Cecil is a hotel valet for these efficiency and discreteness from the 1950s that he gets a butler inside White House itself. There, Cecil would serve numerous US Presidents above the decades being a passive witness of history using the American Civil Rights Movement gaining momentum while his family has troubles of their own. As his wife, Gloria, struggles along with her addictions and his awesome defiant eldest son, Louis, strives to get a just world, Cecil must decide whether he should take action in the own way. The story sounded so promising together with such a potential, so I really was surprised by how mediocre this movie was. What it mainly lacks is soul. None in the many historical events felt something. All fell flat. I didn t even value the Butler s personal story. And the acting was bad. Bad. Even to the standards of Mr. Whitaker. Everyone s acting was worse when compared to a daily soap extra. I blame the Director due to this.
The casting from the presidents have also been an epic failure. Cusak as Nixon? Only Alan Rickman appeared like a good choice for
