Professional Excel Development: The Definitive Guide to Developing Applications Using Microsoft Excel, VBA, 2nd Edition
Visual Studio Tools for Office: Using C with Excel, Word, Outlook, and InfoPath
Visual Studio Tools for Office is definitely one of my personal favorite technologies to recover from Microsoft. There are millions of individuals who use Office applications throughout the day, each day; with VSTO, you may create applications for the children. Eric Carter and Eric Lippert helped create VSTO, to make sure they know as much about this as anybody, thus, making this book a must-have. Robert Green, senior consultant, MCW Technologies
With the applying development community so focused around the Smart Client revolution, a novel that covers VSTO from A to Z is both important and necessary. This book lives nearly big expectations. It is thorough, has a lot of example code, so they cover Office programming generally topics that may be foreign towards the developer who has devoted to applications for several years. Congratulations to Eric Lippert and Eric Carter for this type of valuable work!
Tim Huckaby, CEO, InterKnowlogy; Microsoft Regional Director

We don t buy technical books for light reading, we purchase for them as a resource for creating a solution. This book can be an excellent resource for a person getting started with Smart Client development. For example, it's common to hear a comment like, It is easy to govern the Task Pane in Office 2007 using VSTO 2008, but before you see similar to the example at the outset of Chapter 14, it really is hard to put easy into perspective.
This is often a thorough book that covers anything from calling Office applications from a application, to building applications that happen to be Smart Documents. It allows the conventional Windows developer to actually leverage great and bad Office 2007.

This book is awesome. It covers everything you'll need to know to produce professional level VSTO applications with Visual Studio 2008.
I am glad this book was written using C being a programming language. In the past VBA made a lot to get desired, enough making sure that I never took Office programming serious in any way. When 2003 was released it sparked my interest, but I ran into enough pain straight out of your box to drop it fast. This book has renewed my hope that I can begin to take Office application seriously. By using C the authors reaffirmed this will not be VBA anymore. Had I browsed this book determined it to get written in I would n't have given Office 2007 VSTO another shot, because I would have thought the toolset was still being lost within the VBA world.
For the authors do talk about the differences in VB and C where appropriate, they merely do not provide code types of each.
There are still plenty of traces with the crazy COM programming interfaces inside the interops, but this book does an admirable job of pointing them out and helps guide you to work with them. The missing and ref missing make most elegant code look psychotic. It are going to be nice to get the C 4.0 named and optional arguments feature to remedy the missing and ref missing messes.
The one complaint I have is concerning the code library that goes along with all the book. There isnt one. The only thing provided is word documents which have the code listings on the Chapters cut and pasted in the books manuscript.
All to all I don't think anyone developing VSTO needs to be without this book, and those that arent developing VSTO can purchase the book to teach themselves in regards to the value the technology now provides.
Thank you for the feedback.
Sorry, we still did not record your vote. Please try again
I was using VSTO 3.0 for a couple weeks and desired to gain more of the expert knowledge, to ensure I could optimize performance in your application. I already a working understanding of VSTO, and also this book really wouldn't help. I believe it truly is better targeted towards those who are unfamiliar while using technology. Just always remember that before purchase. The quality is very good, as well as its an easy read, it merely didnt develop the advanced knowledge I was searching for.
I know tremendously about Excel VBA and chosen to get mt feet wet inside the VSTO aspects. This appeared to be quite a sensible activity imo since, although VBA will not be going for being dropped by MS, it's just not going to get developed the maximum amount of if any inside future.
I must say, I think the transition is a lot harder than i expected. Why? Well going through the examples Ive found within the webother VSTO books things are either ambiguous or challenging to see the woods for your trees. This is something I believe this book rectifies.
Its this is the best VSTO book Ive seen, as well as its with C - double bonus in my opinion! Most books within this area are VB. Some of these other books Ive looked over were with utter disbelief! This book is sitting within the top drawer and possesses about 95% products youll need.
It doesnt cover the Excel VBA model in great detail. I beleieve this to really be a positive thing. Covering this may 1. quantity size with the book. 2. Take the focus from what its attempting to achieve - actually using VSTO. BTW, the exact model content that's included is, what I believe, the best content to obtain started to a good developers level. Youre not going to be capable to code hardcore spreadsheets, however it is a step within the right direction.
It covers over Excel word and outlook are included, and so i really skipped those sections pretty much. Something thats easily done using this type of book because of its layout.
The only a dangerous thing I would say relating to this book is that it shows how remarkably good VSTO really is!! The hard elements of Excel VBA development Im talking smart tags, ribbon modifications plus the likes are designed rediculously easy. After being exposed to your power of office development, time for a VBA environment will bring tears with a glass eye!:
I am a seasoned Excel vba programmer. I was very surprised to learn that in C vsto that you must program every Excel event.
Out of desperation I bought this book hoping to uncover how to try this in C. The excel events chapter was not easy to read. Clearly showing the way to implement Excel events should are already the first thing the authors must have done within this chapter. I wouldn't find the answer with this book.
I spent all day every day searching the online world and finally stumbled on for the answer.
