Yes XP isn't perfect but hardly slow when compared to bloated and rushed VISTA. If you start a clean install with XP and your personal computer is still slow its your hardware or you've the wrong drivers installed. This will not be XPs fault.
The alternative is to buy a whole new computer with 7. You can get a whole new one for just a couple hundred and in case you need a great computer for tech then you are able to build your own for any few hundred too. Im sure you can find techs where you live that can help you. Either way the rule of thumb is XP for old computers, and 7 for brand new ones. And when you absolutely cant stand XP a celebrity then switch the signal from linux. Its free and a lot more secure.
