I purchased this book to master SSAS quickly. I already had extensive knowledge about Sql Server, SSIS, Data Warehousing and building OLAP cubes. The book did an admirable job of describing and explaining Data Warehousing and dimensional data concepts. I was rather impressed early within the reading. Unfortunately, I found several issues and missing steps. The first and foremost these was which the sample database doesn't install properly. I found other places the location where the step I was on didnt work because a vital prerequisite step have been left out. I just finished this book and I am really impressed from it - - It was wonderfully written: the chapters are certainly organized from beginning to end; it is quite easy to follow and also you get to practice in each sub-section as you go, steps by steps just as the title said; when you find yourself done by it, it will give you a good foundation basic knowledge to intermediate a higher level SSAS 2008; every explanation it has inside the book is merely right not lengthly and neccessary for that you understand.
What struck me the most could be the book doesn't have a error - - can you think it? Its a miracle. Most with the technical books I bought to date I was so frustrated because besides they usually are not organized, but errors appear left and right inside code and from the exercises. I am just finishing this book, and overall I liked this book. I am not a day-to-day Olap developer but, it provided quite good comprehension of how things are all organized. I only had issues together with the examples as those are typical for Enterprise edition but, I have standard. But, again, I cant blame the author as you'll find many more features for sale in Enterprise edition and, one could also download evaluation edition for 180 days roughly. So, overall, I am quite satisfied that I bought this book - it solved the problem a lot in creating fundamental concepts of MS OLAP solution - this book doesn't cover data mining.

I have 1000s of hours of knowledge about SSAS 2000 and 2005. I think that SSAS is one in the best if unappreciated Microsoft products.
I bought this book for just one reason - that it was the first one available. If you would like one now, then have it. But be warned the reason is not particularly good.
The key problem is how the authors are attracted to XML. They use raw XML to spell out a wide variety of concepts and tasks. For the authors and publishers, it contains the benefit of wasting a great deal of space. This fattens the novel and causes it to be look like you're getting more to your money.
Unfortunately with the readers, it is difficult to study and completely misses the point with the SSAS interface. XML may be the underlying metadata structure of SSAS. That will be the last place you ought to look to comprehend cube and dimensional structure, and for modifying how a cube works.
For an established programmer me, time is money and productivity is everything. First you must should utilize the graphical and tabular representation of metadata to control the cubes and dimension. THEN, you're posting MDX functions when needed. If all else fails, mess using the XML.

If this could be the best SSAS book to the hardcore technologist, then I shudder to consentrate what the worst is.
I bought this book having no knowledge on the SSAS product or MDX. However my preference is for any theory-heavy book in lieu of a step-by-step introductory tutorial, so I prefer to go straight to the jugular together with the expert level book. To their credit the authors being deeply involved within the development of SSAS seem to know this product quite well, but their power to explain concepts effectively and provide you with the overall picture, enabling one to best construct an OLAP system using product, is really a bit lacking.
First, Im puzzled that the book can visit mass production without someone at the least running the link through the grammar checker-you will find numerous grammatical errors throughout this book. The index also doesnt seem very accurate. I also found myself questioning the correctness of an couple code samples. These are even so the first signs the book was hastily written published in an effort for being the first book to market around the 2008 version.
My second problem is while using ability from the authors to clarify concepts of your technology which is foreign to those coming from your RDBMS mindset. MDX can be an odd language, but much of their explanations

This book is not going to teach you what you'll need to do in order to make SSAS be employed by you. It will make that you simply PhD of what SSAS does in the hood. The author clearly hasnt used this tool from the real world, although he is clearly smart enough to possess built it. I mean, who cares regarding the bit structure of how SSAS stores strings? He also spends a LOT of space showing you the DDL from the data structures you build in SSAS in XML format. Seriously? Wish I hadnt bought this book. Its totally worthless for those people who have jobs and want to get some real work done.

All negative reviews allow me to share either regarding it being too complicated or otherwise well written. While to some extent that is correct, I think the positive sides on this book completely outweigh the negative ones. It is important to know who may be the target audience. If you are learning SSAS from scratch and even if you are while on an intermediate level you will find other books that could suit you should. However, in the event you are by using an advanced/expert level and desire to know more about just how SSAS works you will not likely find any book which speaks about SSAS in these detail.
