Having used Microsoft Office with Macs for more than 20 years I recently bought Office for Mac, Home and Business Edition 2011 particularly for use using a new iMac.
Its hard to express how disappointed I am using this edition of Office for Mac! There is great difficulty in opening earlier versions of, , Word and Excel. It takes a long time, with continual error messages and, generally in Excel one who says the sooner file is corrupt and also the open and repair facility simply doesnt work. These same files exist within the earlier version of Office upon an older G4 Mac - no trouble in any way.
To me it certainly isnt really worth cost and I wouldnt advise that any Mac user buy it prior to the many hiccups happen to be ironed out.
