Evangelos Petroutsos is definitely an engineer using a degree in Computer Engineering in the University of California, Santa Barbara. Hes also written titles for publishers like SYBEX, Wiley and McGraw-Hill. These titles include Mastering Visual Basic 6 and Mastering Visual, Power Tools and even more.
During the past several years he's worked with the Google Maps API in numerous projects. His current project is really a large GIS system depending on Google Maps and MapInfo and much on the experience acquired on this field is protected in his last book, Google Maps: Tools for Maximizing the API.
As one more aid to readers of his book, and developers serious about making the most from the Google Maps API as a whole, Evangelos has established a few tutorials, which you'll find at /GoogleMaps. The list of tutorials will grow, provided he's interesting suggestions to share.
I believe other reviewers that this is undoubtedly an excellant book within the Express version of VB 2005. Since I installed the FREE Express version of VB 2005, I bought this book which helped me to finally transition from VB6 to Having purchased the authors VB6 book, I found this VB 2005 Express book to get of similar quality. And I would endorse it to anyone using VB 2005 Express.
The only reason I did not provide the book 5 stars is that there are numerous errors from the book. On the Sybex website, the Errata page due to this book is BLANK. I personally have submitted over the dozen errata and I am not discussing grammatical errors, these are generally programmatical errors to Sybex just for this book. According the Sybex these errata submittals have already been passed along to mcdougal, but mcdougal apparently never responded. IMHO might inconsiderate. I have attempted to contact this author directly to his supposed current email address, published inside the book, nevertheless NO RESPONSE.
If I wrote a manuscript that would be the inspiration for future editions if people, like myself, were reporting errors in my book for FREE, I would be very grateful and I would send most of them a private Thank You. I hope the writer is listening.
The simple truth is that I have in all probability learned a lot by just reading this book carefully enough to get these errors and taking the time to attend my PC and verify that indeed these were errors.
Thank you on your feedback.
This is undoubtedly an excellent guide to Visual Basic 2005 and Framework. It covers all of the important topics. The pace is definitely right a minimum of for me, a professional VB6 programmer new. The author provides you with a good foundation, without confusing you with esoterica. The code samples are well-designed, practical applications, many of which could assist as templates for on-the-job tasks. Kudos on the author to get a job well done!
My only complaint, as well as the reason I gave it 4 stars only, would be the quantity of errors. While one expects errors in technical books, which can be written under deadline pressure, this place seems to contain in excess of most. There are the inevitable typos, most of which can be fairly obvious. There are also many coding errors. I suggest that anyone by using this book recreate and run the cause code listings. You will be amazed at what you encounter! Some from the code is not going to compile; what will sometimes will generate output you didnt expect. I think it is added for the learning experience to alter the bugs. However, I dont think the writer or the publisher had this under consideration.
Another vexation was the origin code for the website. Most of it would not compile in this little machine. The reason because of this according to the article author, who had previously been kind enough to answer my email is that the original source code was compiled having a beta version from the software. I found that creating a different project and adding the forms on the sample reduced the problem in most cases.
Thank you for ones feedback.
The book is extremely good, however, the downloaded program files used within the examples rarely work. Thats what keeps me from giving this book 5 stars.
Thank you on your feedback.
This book isnt for your absolute beginner, nevertheless its one from the best VB 2005 books yet. It covers plenty of topics along with much more depth than best books. Im new, and not a beginner programmer and this also book taught me to be get quickly over the basics with the language and learn some in the more advanced features. It contains many comprehensive tutorials and examples, many of them quite interesting. Also, lots of advanced techniques, and valuable comments on designing practical Windows interfaces the way to minimize the use with the mouse making the most in the Enter key, and how you can use the TreeView and ListView controls in practical UIs beyond directory listings. The chapter on cryptography could be the most comprehensive reading on data encryption, from simple encryption to public key encryption and digital signatures. The examples within this chapter are awesome. Very satisfied with the ebook.
Thank you for the feedback.
I purchased this book to know programming within a visual environment. I have not programmed since I took some courses way back in college programming on the main frame. There are many typos on this book along with the code Does not work in most of sections. I am trying to understand by following as well as the code from the book and acquire hit with lots of errors. When you look with the code in the web site itrrrs very different from what she has in it which is taking huge amounts of time for you to figure out what he's got done. I would not refer this book to anyone trying to know the language.
Thank you for the feedback.
If you are looking to get a VB 2005 book which has it all all numbers of programming - youve thought it was.
What impressed me was its way of writing - plain, highly informative and instantly accessible fantastic to read. Most programming books whatever language are published by programmers that are NOT great at translating programming concepts into plain language - good programmers, but VERY poor teachers.
This is the place Petroutsos excels. He writes in the plain and clear style, however the information is detailed and easily understood. This book assists not only to educate you on VB 2005 but also being a good reference to the future very detailed index.
Conclusion: Very good book, good value, this book can be a WINNER, enjoy!
