I have tried two other free synchronisation software suites: Synkron also SourceForge software and RichCopy from Microsoft. FreeFileSync is superior to both of them for the number of reasons:
1. Intuitive gui: I setup a multiple folder synchronisation during first minutes! The buttons are evident, and when you arent exactly certain of their function, hovering the mouse in the buttons can tell you clarifying information.
2. Informative: I knew just what files were being deleted or updated. The initial compare function is MUCH clearer and easier to utilize than Synkrons analysis function. Synkron gives no details about the analysis as it was occurring, so that you dont really know what progress it's making. FreeFileSync enables you to know the way the comparison is certainly going, and give a very handy graph showing progress, including file transfer rates,
3. Stable: I have not yet had FreeFileSync crash on me. RichCopy and Synkron have both crashed, and Synkron is likely to freeze the machine.
4. Efficient: Synkron writes the synchronisation files with a backup apply for some reason which I cannot disable inside the settings. This both slows the machine down, but uses up a significant amount of hard disk memory after a while, because these files usually are not deleted. This program is extremely good. I are actually using it between 2 computers for 30 days and no issues. I was using SyncToy for just a few years with few problems, but recently SyncToy did start to delete the newer files, several of which I spent hours writing. Thankfully I found FreeFileSync also it is working perfectly.
By far the best and the majority flexible file sync software I have find. Allows for customization. The only software I know that lets you only sync files which exist already in the source and destination folders. This feature comes in handy to complete versioning.

But also allows many advanced tweaks like what to accomplish with deleted files etc. The program is fully featured yet not bloated. Excellent, works perfectly between my MAC and my corporate server based with a Microsoft environment. The only bad point that I see, could be the usage of Realtimesync, a power tool to automatize the synchronization each time a folder opens up. Its not fully explained tips on how to manage over one directory!

Great application for all those your file/folder comparison and synchronisation needs. Allows you to add multiple, specific source and target folders and utilize filters to exclude including specific files and/or sub-paths.

I planned to synchronise a Windows 7 64-bit Notebook, an iMac Lion with Samba enabled. I have a great deal of data to synchronise, about 150 GB and 200, 000 files. Ive tried SyncToy from Microsoft, Windows 7 built-in synchronisation center, AlwaySync, Syncback, SkyDrive, therefore Each of those tools took VERY long within the good case, or hanged within the bad case:-
