I bought this book after I thought we would study abroad in Germany. I got it to exchange my 1992 Langenscheidt German Compact Dictionary. After 20 good many years of use both inside a high school for quit some time and some nearly a year abroad, my old book is finally starting retirement. Even with all the grammar change in 1996, almost all of the entries during my old book remained pretty accurate, and I loved that old entry system, but that rugged little thing needs for being put to rest.
I was apprehensive in the beginning with my another one. Id never looked inside version meant for that native English speaker before, and although one probably won't think theres a significant difference, I found some important distinctions:
1. The ones you can choose from in Germany, while containing identical dictionary sections, have conversions for all those sorts of measurements from metric to Standard, whereas the English version contains the opposite. Especially important for individuals that like to bake and people who arent knowledgeable about how long a kilometer or even a meter, even is.
2. The German version posesses a list of every one of the irregular English verbs, whereas the English version includes a list of every one of the irregular German verbs
3. The the way you use this book section from the German version is naturally in German. While it isnt nuclear physics, I like knowing each of the nuances with the dictionary because doing so contains some helpful grammar info which may go unnoticed if the understanding section is skipped.
4. The English version also contains various tidbits like basic mathematical phrases eg how you can say 1/3 or 6 x 7 and German counting terms 1st, 2nd, so on

After using Harper-Collins and many other German-English dictionaries for German language courses, Langensheidt can be a breath of outside. The operative terms being defined are in the hot blue color, so that they jump from the page at you, and also the variants with the words from the entry for any root word may also be highlighted. I cant show you how much time it is saved me. As anyone who's studied a certain amount of German knows, what we encounter are sometimes not the essential form with the words that any of us are actually seeking, so, without such highlighting, looking things up in other dictionaries becomes a lot more time consuming. Each entry has each of the information you might want, or, at the least, that I have needed around my current intensive German reading course. Such banal information, for instance articles, pronunciation keys, and plurals, is protected; but one with the nice aspects of this dictionary is the fact that separable prefixes are indicated, which many dictionaries, i really enjoy seeing, tend not to include. Among the favourite fairly portable German-English dictionaries I have found, this one gets the biggest bang for buck. The only style of dictionary that is going to become significantly better than this will probably be an unabridged German-English dictionary, as well as many of those dont contain information such as the separability of prefixes. I think that one covers just about every one of the bases, insofar as my experience is worried.

The Langensheidt Dictionary can be a great resource. The blue highlighted words allow it to be super very easy to use plus the information can be quite thorough.
This dictionary is designed for my needs. It has all standard translations. The only thing I wish it had were verb conjugations but really it is often a good tool.
This dictionary is certainly the best German-English dictionary that I purchased. It was recommended by way of a German translator He is German within our office. This is definitely an excellent dictionary! I love the blue headwords rendering it easy to locate entries. Also, the truly amazing amount of idiomatic expressions is incredibly helpful. Im translating a magazine from German to English included in my learning German, and it's been perfect.
It is usually a good dictionary, but it could possibly be better, though that could certainly require an increase in weight and size. For example, when one looks inside the word sterben,to die it isn't found under an unbiased entry of that own, but in the heading Sterbebett deathbed, after Sterbefall, Sterbehilfe, and ultimately sterben, camouflaged from the middle in the column. Other German dictionaries, CASSELLs for instance, offer a word like - sterben- an entry of that own, detached using words on the same origin, which may make life less difficult on the reader. Otherwise, the font is nice, although the binding is within the shaky side, probably not created for prolonged usage.

I dont much like the way the verbs are organized; I find it very puzzling. Like every one of the verbs which can be related to one verb are lumped together and hard to get individually.

My apprehensions above the English version were misplaced, however, and I was overjoyed to discover that those wise and reasonable people at Langenscheidt had largely saddled with their very functional format on the 90s. This bad boy contains you'll find word youre want to, provided you are not a chemical engineer or biologist lecturing in German. It has got the plural and genitive forms for almost all of the nouns, classifies the verbs in a very pretty useful manner, and includes a pretty intuitive layout. It also incorporates a nice phonetic chart comparing the sounds between your two languages, and contains pronunciation breakdowns with the harder-to-say words. I wasnt keen about the blue Headwords in the previous version these people were just black and bold, but thats personal preference. The best things on this little monster, however, will be the example sentences within some with the definitions. While you aren't going to learn German grammar with this book, the examples are pretty straight forward, relevant, and above all, accura
My only complaints are that it edition with the book is about two times as large as my old pocket dictionary, with only a couple thousand more entries. Same thickness, but basically doubled in page size. The upshot here is always that it is much easier to learn, but unless youre packing it around within your backpack, this isnt a pocket dictionary anymore.
In short: If youre only going to become passing through, this book is actually a bit much in your case. Its big, powerful, and means business! If youre going for being spending a lengthy period of time in Germany, or if youre studying anything from beginner to advanced German, you can't find a better book. Especially with the price. Under 15 because of this thing is completely insane.

Overall this dictionary seems very nice- the top's appears durable, the entries are easy to see, plus the size is portable. However, as others have mentioned, there is really a problem with all the binding. In my case, pages 601 through 660 are duplicated and have absolutely taken the site of pages 877 through 936. I will be returning this dictionary and looking a replacement.
As an, ahem, older user, the usage of blue and bold lettering makes it less of a challenge for me to locate and read words. My old Pons was actually an eye chart. I use the dictionary repeatedly a day, therefore, the ease of reading is extremely good. Nice size, too.
