Aptly referred to as Quark-Killer, InDesign rocked my world once I used it version 1.5. There was hardly any learning curve personally, as a result of familiar Adobe interface. My only complaint then was which it was a bit sluggish i thought this was improved greatly with version 2.0.
I would choose to address some negative features I have seen reviewed with InDesign.
1. Type styles. In a Postscript workflow, menu styling of fonts like used in Quark and Pagemaker is definitely an abomination. If there is no italic variant designed for a font, then a last thing you want is perfect for your DTP software to fake it. It produces horrible makes a professional workflow, including font defaulting. The fact that InDesign only enables you to use italic or bold in the event the font is made to do so can be a blessing, not much of a curse, and can hopefully give an end many years of agony for pre-press professionals.
2. Optical kerning. This again is made to function properly in a very postscript printing environment. If you are proofing that has a non-postscript printer, it might probably be easier to create/export a PDF file from the InDesign document, and try printing from that. Keep in your mind that InDesign is professional software which is designed that has a professional postscript workflow planned.

Im currently studying graphic design and still have learned InDesign before learning Quark, along with the differences amaze me. InDesign is definitely the better product: Photoshop and Illustrator files might be dragged and dropped into an InDesign document; frames be employed by either text or graphics; onscreen viewing has a number of options from proxy to high-resolution; the list goes on. I had to upgrade from PageMaker because providers no longer supported it. InDesign 2 is effective with OS m in business.

Quark has become absolute garbage since disaster that had been 4.0. I hung to Quark 3.32 until I couldnt stand it anymore. InDesign 1.0 sucked, granted, but 1.5 was good enough in my opinion to switch, and Ive been quite happy with versions 2 and 3. I really like just how everything works in InDesign CS; I do not have complaints. In fact, I wish Adobe will bring some of its aging applications up on the modern UI standard that InDesign enjoys. By contrast, Illustrator the app I spend the majority of my time in seems ancient and clumsy.
